Cruel Garters

Issues (2013 - present)

Announcement (18 Jan 2023):  After a pandemic inspired sabbatical, Cruel Garters returns in 2023.  We continue to seek to publish well-established & newer voices, minimizing literary trappings and focusing on the work itself.  We continue to prefer the short, lyrical, and odd.  And in the little universe of Cruel Garters, we continue to share David Lehman's thought from The Last Avant-Garde (1998) that "there is an urgent need for a poetry that can press back against the pressures of reality, and...that the example of the New York School may best show the way" (p. 15).  25 years later, this still could be true.  Whether it's successive generations of this anti-school NY state of mind or spontaneous emergences of family resemblances to it from anywhere on the globe, we seek this pushback: the romance and serious play of an aesthetic agenda that comes from the neighborhood of your mind -- one to another and back again, bound up in the bodies of these strange little machines still called poems.   -The Editors

Mission/Vision:  To publish well-established & newer voices, minimizing literary trappings and focusing on the work itself.  We prefer the short, lyrical, and odd.
